Andrea Campbell

Attorney General, Commonwealth of Massachusetts

"Each of us has our own unique story.  Each of us has been shaped by people in our own lives.  I believe that if we truly listen to each other’s stories, we’ll be stronger individually and together.  None of us got here by ourselves, and when we go forward together, we can accomplish great things."

When we first met then-Councilor Campbell, we knew she was committed to helping young people.  We were inspired by her ability to hold all of us accountable for making positive change now.  What we hadn’t understood was how her life story instilled her sense of urgency and determination.

Campbell grew up in public housing and without parents for the first eight years of her life after her mother died in a car crash on her way to visit her father in jail. Her two brothers cycled through the criminal justice system, and her twin brother, Andre, died at 29 of an autoimmune disease while in state custody as a pre-trial detainee.

With support from her family, teachers, and community, Attorney General Campbell turned pain into purpose. She graduated from Boston Latin School, Princeton University, and UCLA Law School and pursued a legal career in both the private and public sectors.

When Campell was elected to Boston’s City Council in 2015, her first legislation was the Community Preservation Act, generating $20+ million yearly for affordable housing, historical preservation, and parks and open space. In 2018, she was the first Black woman to be elected City Council President.  She ran for Mayor in 2020 and was elected Attorney General in 2022.

We are proud to call Attorney General Campell a friend of LEAP.  We aspire to lead as she does, with her heart, her head, and her hands.
